Blue Hill at Stone Barns

Wildly expensive and miles out of town, but probably the best eating experience I've had in a long time. Really special - everyone should go at least once. Most of their ingredients come from their own farm (or very close by from like-minded producers) and menus are created specifically for each diner around what's available and personal preferences (vegetarians would do as well here as carnivores). Top notch service, a lovely dining room and altogether a fantastic experience. Definitely dress up, book an early table and settle in for a long evening. There's also a cafe at the farm that's open during the day, which serves nice snacks, salads etc.

Well worth the 40 minutes on the train from Grand Central Station and the cab fare for some of the best food in the world. Go late afternoon and walk around the farm that grows most of what you are going to eat. Not a cheap date but worth every penny.
